Obituary for Cleo L. Mertz

Cleo L. Mertz, 74, passed away Saturday, January 19, 2019 at University of Louisville Hospital. She was born June 20, 1944 in Louisville, KY the daughter of Raymond R. and Mary Nell “Bunny” Jarrell Lucas. She was a graduate of the University of Kentucky and a retired partner of the “Hat Ladies” Realty. She loved art and teaching art to others. She enjoyed bible study, was an avid reader and helped found The Lions Club in Elizabeth. She was also involved at the Harrison County Veterans Association and worked the election polls. She was active in Harrison County Relay for Life, was a member of the Palmyra Lions Club, she was a former member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Elizabeth and a current member of St. Michaels Catholic Church in Bradford, IN. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dick “Pop” Mertz. Cleo and “Pop” were owners of “Pop’s Place” in Elizabeth. She is survived by three sons, Paul Conder (Jo) of Cedar Park, TX, Richard L. Mertz and Tod D. Mertz both of Shepherdsville, KY; two daughters, Nina Atherton (Glen) of Shepherdsville, KY and Toni Greanias (David) of Louisville, KY; Brother, Buzz Lucas (Peggy) of Beauford, S.C.; two sisters, Mary Nell Griste (Paul) of Punta Gorda, FL and Anita Schellenberger (John) of Greenville, IN; nephew, Alex Lucas; nieces, Krista Kagan, Tina Sunter, Jessica Tkac, Jill M. Shaw and Julie Schellenberger; Great nieces, Claire Sunter and Amelia Tkac and great nephew, Ethan Sunter; nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 AM Thursday, January 24, 2019 at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Bradford, IN. Father John Fink will officiate. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery in Elizabeth, IN. Visitation will be from 1 PM to 8 PM Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at Gehlbach & Royse Funeral Home in Corydon, IN. In lieu of flowers and to honor Cleo, a 30+ year cancer survivor, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
