Obituary for Carol Ellen (Manning) Shaffer

Elizabeth, Indiana
Carol Ellen Manning Shaffer, 78, went to meet Jesus peacefully at her home, surrounded by her family on January 30, 2019.
She was born on April 15, 1940, in cold Springs, Kentucky, to John William and Geneva Bowman Manning. Her mother passed when she was five years old and she was blessed with a new mother, Rosemary Lively Manning.
Carol was a retired Dairy Farmer, 4-H Leader, Homemaker and baby sitter for numerous children in the community. She loved babysitting her grandchildren and great grandchildren, even taking them to the milk house with her. They all loved going to Granny’s house. She loved raising her bottle calves, her flower gardens, roses, and MOWING her yard. She always had something delicious baked and who ever stopped in would go to Granny’s kitchen for a tasty treat. She had a passion to cook and it became a cooking ministry. She cooked meals and baked goods for family, neighbors, and folks in need. Mechanics, Seed and Fertilizer Representatives would come specifically at lunch time to enjoy a country cooked meal. She attended Bethesda UM Church and later Smith Campground UM Church. She loved her church families.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her youngest daughter, Christine Carol Shaffer.
Survivors include her high school sweetheart and husband Virgil Ray Shaffer. Her three children, Jeffery Ray Shaffer (Sherry), Cynthia Carol Bratcher (Mike), and Beth Ann Ferree (Bruce). Her grandchildren and great grandchildren: Jeffery Ray Shaffer Jr. (Amy), Alex, Brandt, Ty & Jax; Sheldon Allen Shaffer (Gina), Lillian, Rhett & Henry; Kristin Renee Blackman (Craig), Porter; Brandon Michael Bratcher (Stephanie) Craig, Abby, & Luke; Scott Allen Ferree, all of Elizabeth; Amanda Renee Smith (Franklin) and Caroline Rose to be born in April. Her brother and sisters, Barbara Mullen (David) of New Amsterdam, Paul Manning (Linda) of Lanesville, Lindy Wilder (Michael) of Edwardsville, Sue Harrison (Jesse) of Lincolnton, Georgia, and her uncle who was like her brother, Hubert Manning Jr. of Lexington, Kentucky
The past six months, she became quite the traveler going back and forth to MD Anderson Cancer Hospital in Houston, Texas. She loved her Dr. Bravo, NP Otee, and the Leukemia Team. She touched so many lives there. The nurses all wanted her as their patient. She also loved her medical family at Norton’s Cancer Center in Corydon.
We are so thankful for all the prayers, cards, visits and concerns. She is at peace now and resides with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Funeral service will be Sunday, February 3, 2019 at 2:00 PM at Gehlbach & Royse Funeral Home in Corydon, Indiana. Visitation will begin Saturday, February 2, from 12 Noon to 8 PM. and Sunday from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Interment will be in Bethesda UM Church Cemetery,
The family suggests Memorial donations be made to MD Anderson Cancer Center. Leukemia Research Dept. 1515 Holcombe Blvd. Houston, TX, 77030
