Obituary for Ruby E. Grant Rooksby

Ruby Elizabeth Rooksby, 96, passed away on April 18, 2018 in her apartment at the Forum Senior Community in Indianapolis, Indiana. Ruby was born November 24, 1921, the fourth child of Cordie and Goldie (Kishline) Dean. She is survived by her daughter Diana Dawn (Marvin) Graves and her son Kelly David (Debbie) Grant. She had four grandchildren; Tiffany Dawn (Eric Leins) Graves, Tyler Grant (Sandhya) Graves, Aaron David (Marissa) Grant, and Kendra Marie (John Kaeding) Grant, Jessica Jane (Todd) Desmond. Her great grandchildren are Davis Allen Grant, Nolan Grant Graves, Wyatt Markand Graves, Lilly Shanti Graves, Destiny Desmond, and Leland Desmond.
Ruby grew up in Mauckport, Indiana and graduated from Mauckport High School. Her family including her siblings Louise (Dean) Nossett, Wilbur Dean, and Welton Dean later moved to Central Indiana where she assisted her father by working the family general store..

During World War II, Ruby met and later married David Aaron Grant in 1944. He was serving in the US Navy as Chef Petty Office. They met during his brief visit home to see his parents living in Central before being re-deployed to the USS Randolph. At end of the war and upon David returning home they eventually settled in Corydon and began to raise a family. Life was good until David passed away in 1962 due to a heart attack.
Ruby persevered and took a new job at the O’Bannon Publishing Company. She worked at the front desk of the Corydon Democrat assisting customers with subscriptions and classified ads. She loved her work and over years Ruby became the face of the Corydon Democrat, meeting and greeting all who came into the office. She was there as the paper grew and incorporated new technology learning to use the new computer systems; a feat she was quite proud of. Later and into the end of her career at the paper she wrote a popular column called “Looking Backward”. Ruby spent hours at the library researching old publications and writing about past evens in Harrison County. In 2007 Ruby retired from the Corydon Democrat after 43 years of service to the paper. She was 85 years old.
In 1972 she married Harry “Buck” Rooksby, a man who spent his entire career in educations. After working in public school system in Peru Indiana, Buck returned to his hometown roots in Harrison County to become principal of the middle school in Elizabeth IN. He and Ruby managed two homes; one in Corydon and the “farm” near Laconia. They enjoyed dancing, playing euchre, and traveling together. They were married for 27 years until Buck passed away due to a stroke in 1999.
Ruby continued on and enjoyed good health as she continued to meet new friends,, travel to see her kids and grandkids, keep up with politics, and watch every IU basketball game possible. Over the years she attended each grandchild’s college graduation, was at each of their weddings, and later played with her great grandchildren. She continued to attend her church Old Capital United Methodist, play euchre and bunko, learn enough about football to follow the Colts.

In the Fall of 2016 Ruby moved to Indianapolis to be closer to family. She became a resident at the Forum at the Crossing where she maintained her own apartment. Even here she soon met new friends and euchre partners, was with family at every holiday event, and adapted well to her new surroundings. Ruby passed away on April 18, her heart failing to keep up with her active live and outgoing personality. While a short lady even in her favorite high heels, she lived tall to the end.
She will be missed by her family and friends, but she leaves a legacy of love, faith, friendship, and fun that will live on in the countless lives she has touched.

The funeral ceremony will be at 11 AM Monday, April 23rd, 2018 at Gehlbach and Royse Funeral Home in Corydon, IN. Rev. Andy Hansen will officiate.
Visitation will begin Sunday, April 22nd, 2018 from 12 PM until 8 PM with an Eastern Star Ceremony at 7:30 PM at the funeral home. Visitation will continue Monday morning from 9 AM until the service at 11 AM.
