Rita M. Wingerter, 94, of Elizabeth, Indiana, passed away peacefully at home on April 29, 2018 surrounded by her family. She was born Rita Marie Keeven in Florissant, Missouri, on February 23, 1924, to the late Harry and Agnes Kohnen Keeven. On January 17, 1948, Rita was married to Robert B. Wingerter at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Florissant. He predeceased her after 68 years of marriage. Rita worked as a bookkeeper at Ft. Harrison in Indianapolis, at the Lawrence Journal, and at the Animal Hospital of Lanesville. Her primary reason for working was to put her four children through private high school and college. Her most important role was that of mother and grandmother. Her children all survive: Robert B. (Deborah) Wingerter, Jr. of Zionsville, Ronald (Alison) Wingerter of Kewanna, Randall Wingerter of Zionsville, and Dr. Rene (Steve) Wingerter Buchanan of Elizabeth. She is also survived by nine grandchildren: Heidi Beauchamp, Deidra Smith, Robert B. Wingerter, III, Zachary Wingerter, Seth Wingerter, Rachel Mayhew, Kendra Wingerter, Erin Wingerter and Melissa Buchanan, and nineteen great-grandchildren.
Rita was one of twelve children. She was preceded by Sister Theophila Keeven, John Keeven, Fred Keeven, Alma O’Brien, Claire Schmidt, infant Harry Keeven, Ignatious Keeven, Joseph Keeven, and Phillip Keeven. She is survived by sister Toni Korba of indianapolis and brother Frank Keeven of Florissant, and many nieces and nephews. Rita enjoyed cooking for her family and many years ago published her own recipe book. She and Bob enjoyed traveling throughout the United States after retirement. She also spent many hours with her grandchildren and especially liked to have tea parties with her granddaughters. She also made Barbie doll clothes for them. Rob, Ron, and Randy would like to thank their sister, Rene, for the many hours she spent caring for both parents.
